This song is one I wrote many years ago while still a student at Juilliard. I'd read an Irish folktale about a woman who goes to the shore after being abandoned by her lover, and was fascinated with the mysterious figure who approaches her. In my version of the story, what happens to her is not entirely clear, and left to each of us to imagine for ourselves.

The fiddle tune in the middle of the song is "Far an robh mi'n raoir" (Where I Was Last Night), written by Niall MacLeoid sometime in the 19th Century.

A maiden fair one windswept night
was walking cross the shore
the stars shone in her raven hair
no wedding ring she wore.
She’d gone into the waves at night
to shed her tears alone
when a ghostly knight on a storm-grey steed,
rode out upon the foam:

To a castle of the deepest blue
